Apart from regular TV programming like movies, series/sitcoms, and a host of other things you could possibly find on Cable television, documentaries are my favorite go to. I can spend an entire day watching real-life issues and how they affect people. For the life of me, I don’t know why I love watching those. My brother has accused me of deriving joy from people’s pain. But that is very far from the truth. Okay where is Evi going with this you might ask.

I was busy watching body bizarre the other day on TLC and I stumbled upon a story about a teenage African girl who had a tumor that was engulfing her face. The tumor grew steadily over the years and had now gotten to the point where it became a threat to her life, during the time of filming.
Her family had lost all hope, as to how they were going to help their child. Then one day, a pastor came across the girl and informed her family about Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships is a non-profit organization that performs life-changing surgery for those who don’t have access to quality healthcare.
They ride around the coasts of continents like Africa, seeking people they can help. This ship is a fully functional hospital which contains everything a medical team would need to carry out a successful operation. From their experienced medical practitioners to the equipment they need for scans and operations; the ship is fully equipped.
These angels picked up the girls case and went ahead to set up an appointment for her to have the life-saving operation. The surgery was successful and gave the young girl her life back. This beneficiary is only one out of the thousands of people they help each year. I had never heard of them until I watched the girl’s story unfold on TLC’s hit show.
It was just amazing to see an organization dedicated to catering to those who have no hope. What’s more, they are a Christian organization that is committed to showing people the love of Jesus, through the work that they do. Founded in 1978 by Don Stephens, they have volunteers from all over the world, with offices in 16 countries.
Their mantra is transforming lives and serving nations, one at a time. Why a ship, you might ask? they decided on ships because of communities where they have limited medical resources, electricity and clean water. It is also said that people reside 100 miles away from the coast, so it is easier to reach them that way.

We are always drawn to people or organizations doing amazing work for their communities or for those who can’t fend for themselves due to circumstances like poverty. That is one of the mandate Christ has given Christians apart from the great commission, which is to care for those who are in need.
